Is it Hearing defect or Listening defect?
My husband and me both are leading a retired-life. I have been complaining that my husband's hearing has gone worse. Even my daughter and son keep saying, "How many times I told you. Can't you hear Daddy?"
My husband answers humorously, " no my dear, my ear gone Da..maa...r!"
In this context my son quoted this. "Three old ladies met on the street on a very stormy day. The wind was so strong and loud that they had difficulty in hearing each other. " It's windy" said one. "No it's Thursday" said the next. "So am I" said the third. "Let's go and have a drink"
On hearing that, we burst into laughter.
My husband one day asked me, "what's my defect? Is it hearing or listening?"
I said, "Just think of the difference at first.
Hearing is simply the act of perceiving sounds by the ear.
For example, I heard a noise come from kitchen.
Listening is something you consciously choose to do. It requires concentration.
My husband always likes Mukesh' old Hindi songs. It's a known fact in the entire family. No exaggeration in it.
So I said to him, " You like to listen the good old songs of Mukesh."
One more example I gave.
While teaching to my students, I used to ask boys in the last desk, "Can you hear me?"
They used to scream, "No ma'm we can't"
"Then be silent, you can hear me. Listen carefully, I 'll ask you questions in the end" Off and on I used to say like this.
Listening is paying attention and analyzing the things what is heard. At last he seems to be pleased with my answer.
When my husband goes out in evening, I remind him to buy things from 'Ballal Shop'. With fingers he counts and makes it sure that he has to buy five things and says 'O K'.
After meeting his friends and chating with them, finally when he enters the shop to buy things, his mind seems to go blank and slowly he recalls one by one and buys four things.
He feels there is one more item to be bought but its name does n't come to his mind. He can use his phone and ask me about it but he never does. His pride comes in the way. He comes back home only with four things.
"Where is milk?" when I ask, "It's not available" he answers swiftly. I have to make arrangement to get it. I get angry at that time but my husband has a good sense of humor also .
He says, " Don't worry, I shall consult an ENT and improve listening skill. Things will retain well in my memory hereafter. Its my New Year Resolution." Ultimately we'll have delightful laugh.
